What we do

Overview…

Here you can find a brief overview of each of the services we offer, with more detailed information below. (You can select the relevant button to jump right to that section).

In each section we have given examples of the work we might carry out, but these are by no means exhaustive lists so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you are looking for something we haven’t discussed here.

Why not have a look through the sections below to find out how we can help you link with the support you need.

Link With… Yourself (Therapy)

Individual therapy can be a meaningful process at any time. If you are facing difficulties you are struggling to overcome, if you are in a stage of transition and need space to reflect and discuss, if your mental health is not as good as you would like it to be – all are reasons people might seek out support from a psychological therapist.

We offer individual therapy in person in different locations across North East Fife and in Dundee with one of our qualified and registered Clinical Psychologists. They can draw on a wide range of therapeutic models to best meet your needs, and work in collaboration with you to help you meet your goals.

For more information about the locations and fees for our individual therapeutic work, click here.

Link with… Advice (Email Support)

Sometimes people have a specific question or issue they would like some advice for, and we offer a question-answer written service (conducted via email) that provides you with the chance to seek advice or information without the need for individual appointment(s). Sometimes this might be in relation to stress-management strategies, signposting to self-help, information in relation to parenting issues, or one-off queries in relation to professional development or research. (For more about research support, see below).

We offer a range of advice services depending on the sort of support you are seeking. All include a comprehensive written response to your query, with varying levels of follow-up contact via email depending on your needs.

For more information about the tiers and fees for our advice service, click here.

Link with… Development (Clinical Supervision)

Clinical supervision is an integral part of any therapist’s professional practice. Our Clinical Psychologists are trained and qualified supervisors. If you deliver therapy either as a Trainee or a qualified clinician (at any level; from CBT Therapy, Counselling, Clinical Associates or Clinical Psychologists) our Psychologists can meet your needs for clinical supervision.

We are also now in the position to offer specialist supervision in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). If you are working towards ACT accreditation or developing your skills within this model, specialist supervision is a key part of this process, and we are pleased to be able to provide this new service for you.
For more information about the locations and fees for supervision, click here.

Link with… Learning (CPD and Training)

Whether you are in individual, a small business, or a large organisation looking for something new for your continuing professional development, LINKAT Psychology can help. We can develop and deliver training specifically to meet your needs. Examples include – but are not limited to – training around specific mental health difficulties, identifying and supporting issues related to mental health, developing a trauma-informed workforce, information about therapeutic models, or even about understanding the pathways into practicing as a Psychologist.

For more information about commissioning training, click here.

Link with… Research (Consultation and Support)

Research is a key skill in and out of Psychology. Whether you are completing a dissertation or thesis in Undergraduate or Postgraduate education, are conducting an audit within your organisation, or small-scale research with the general public, we can support you. From idea to generation, through methodology and up to write up, we can provide consultation across the research process. This might take the form of brief consultations about proposed methodologies, providing feedback on a draft of your work, or more intensive consultation across the research process.

For more information about our research consultation services, click here.

Link with… Safeguarding (Consultation and Supervision)

Managing safeguarding issues as a therapist in private practice can be tough and anxiety provoking. Our safeguarding lead is available to offer one off consultation as well as in depth supervision on a range of safeguarding issues. We also offer a range of safeguarding training specifically aimed at supporting therapeutic practitioners to feel confident and competent at managing safeguarding issues.

For more information about our safeguarding services, click here.

Therapy

Therapy is a personal process, and everyone’s therapeutic journey will be different. Some people will have more sessions, or a different type of therapy, depending on their needs and their goals for treatment. We provide a tailored therapeutic service to ensure the therapy you receive supports you in the right way. Below is some general information about our Therapy services, but if you have more questions, please feel free to look at our Frequently Asked Questions or to send us a message via our contact page.

What kind of difficulties can we help you with?

As Clinical Psychologists we are trained to treat a range of different mental health difficulties. It isn’t possible to list them all, but some common difficulties we treat are:

  • Anxiety
  • Phobia
  • Depression/Low Mood
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Distressing Thoughts or Emotions
  • Panic attacks
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Reactions to stressful life circumstances
  • Trauma

In addition to specific difficulties like the ones noted above, people often are looking for therapy for other reasons including:

  • Difficulties managing life transitions
  • Coping with physical ill health
  • As an opportunity to reflect on current functioning
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Bereavement
  • Personal reflection and discovery

This is by no means an exhaustive list, so if the difficulties you are experiencing aren’t listed here, please still get in contact with us.

What therapies do you offer?

Clinical Psychologists are trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), along with many other types of therapies and therapeutic approaches. The therapeutic model used in your treatment will be suggested based on what best meets your needs, and following your assessment, your Psychologist will have an idea of what approach will suit you best. They will discuss this with you and explain why they are suggesting a specific therapy or approach. If you have a preference for a specific therapy, you can discuss this with your Psychologist. We draw on a wide range of therapeutic models, but the therapies we use most often are described below.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a treatment that has a good evidence base for treating most mental health difficulties. It looks at how our thoughts and behaviours influence our emotions which in turn, influence the way we think and what we do. Treatment focusses on challenging unhelpful thinking and encourages you to change your behaviour. CBT focusses on the here and now, and involves practicing things you learn in-between sessions.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a newer approach which has an emerging evidence base. ACT focusses on making changes in line with what is important in our lives. It will help you to identify core areas in your life that are important to you. It will then help you to move towards these using techniques including mindfulness.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) Approaches

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) was originally designed for the treatment of depression, but the evidence-base for its effectiveness in treating other mental health difficulties is growing. IPT focuses on you and your relationships, working on the premise that our relationships are at the centre of psychological difficulties. IPT-informed approaches teach you the skills to communicate with others in a way that better suits your needs and helps to address problems that are sustaining those difficulties.

Emotion Regulation Approaches

Sometimes we might struggle to regulate our emotions. We may feel ‘cut off’ from our emotions and feel numb or zombie like. We may feel like our emotions overwhelm us and we tend to react in ways we aren’t proud of. These approaches uses techniques to help you feel more in control of your emotions – to feel connected to them, but not overwhelmed by them

Where do I get therapy, and how much does it cost?

The location of your therapy will depend on the Psychologist you are working with. Our clinics are based in Heal in Dundee and The Paxton Centre in Lundin Links, Fife.  We also offer online therapy via Skype.

Therapy sessions are 55 minutes in length, and cost £105 per session. So that we can secure clinic space for the time of your appointment, we ask that all fees are paid 48 hours before your appointment via BACS transfer.  Unfortunately, any cancellations within the 48 hour period are subject to charges; please see our full terms and conditions for details.

We realise that our therapy rate may not fit within your budget. We also offer alternative methods to get advice which may meet your needs and more in-keeping with what you had budgeted for. Find out more in our advice section.

What should I do if I want to be seen?

If you would like to be seen by one of our Clinical Psychologist, please go to our contact page and select ‘Therapy Enquiry’ from the drop-down menu. This will ask you for some basic contact details, as well as for a very brief description of your difficulties. We offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation for all new clients, which gives us an opportunity to get an idea of what help you are looking for, and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions or tell us about any worries you might have. At the end of this telephone conversation we can suggest next steps. This might be to book an appointment with one of our Clinical Psychologists or, if we feel we’re not the right service for you, we will tell you and suggest other places you might look to for support.

What happens in a first appointment?

If we think we can help you to meet your goals we will offer you an assessment with one of our Clinical Psychologists. At this assessment appointment, you will meet your Clinical Psychologist and have the opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy. They will likely ask you lots of questions about your current difficulties and what your goals are. They might also ask about your past. This can help us to understand your current difficulties, but you don’t have to talk about the past if you don’t want to. At the end of this session your Clinical Psychologist should be able to give you an idea of what treatment approach they think will help you, and the plan going forward. This is a collaborative process and any decisions will be made together.

If you decide to engage in the treatment plan suggested by your Clinical Psychologist you will continue to see them for a number of sessions. Treatment is unique and individual to each person and will take a different number of sessions for each person. If you are aware that you are only able to afford a certain number of sessions, discuss this with your Clinical Psychologist. You will then be able to decide together what goals to focus on.

Supervision

Supervision is an integral part of providing any therapy in a safe and effective way. It helps you to refocus on what you and your client want to achieve, to develop and deepen your formulations, and gives space to reflect on any challenges that arise.

At LINKAT Psychology we believe supervision should do all these things and provide a space for you to grow as a practitioner and a person in line with your own values.

What sort of supervision do you offer, and how much does it cost?

We offer supervision to a variety of therapists including – but not limited to – Clinical Psychologists, Counselling Psychologists, Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapists. We tailor your supervision according to your needs.

We offer both face-to-face and online supervision.

If supervision is paid for by your organisation, our fee is £100 per hour. If you are self-funding your supervision, we offer a discounted rate of £90 per hour.

What do I do if I would like to arrange supervision?

To make an enquiry about Supervision, please contact us by emailing admin@linkatpsychology.co.uk

We would recommend looking at our Who We Are page to identify if there is a particular clinician you feel may best fits your supervision needs.

Advice

Sometimes we don’t need or want individual therapy sessions or a training session to get support; instead we just need to be pointed in the right direction to answer our questions for ourselves, or things we can try to make things better without ongoing support. Our Advice service provides you with non-judgemental evidence-based responses that help you to find the solutions to your difficulties in a way that works for you.

What sort of things do you offer advice for?

In short, anything!

From difficulties with sleep and self-confidence, to making important life decisions or approaching a difficult situation at work and everything in between. We’ve included a couple of examples here to give you an idea of the sorts of things people seek advice for.

(Please note that these are demonstrative and not copies of actual contact from clients).

  • Example One

    Hi there,

I’m looking for some advice. I’ve never been a great sleeper but it’s got a lot worse over the last few months. Now it can take me 2-3 hours to fall asleep and I just seem to toss and turn, and can’t get my brain to turn off! I’ve been trying to make sure I get plenty of exercise so I’m physically tired, even doing a little work out before bed to try and get tired but it doesn’t seem to be working. I just want to be able to get a good night’s rest! What would you suggest?

    Thank you!

  • Example Two

    Hi,

I’m finding that my self-esteem is pretty low at the moment, and it’s really affecting my relationship with my wife. I either find myself not speaking much because I’m wrapped up in my own head, or I’m a bit snappy because I feel frustrated with myself and then feel even worse about taking it out on her. I don’t want to commit to therapy right now but I’d like some advice on what I can do for self-help.

    Thanks.

How much support will I get, and how much does it cost?

We provide a detailed response to your query, with advice grounded in the evidence-base that relates to your question. We make sure to respond to all aspects of your question, and – wherever applicable – we will link you to online resources you can access or recommend further reading that may help with your issue.

An email with a single, straightforward question like the ones above will receive one detailed response with no follow-up afterwards. This costs £45.

Sometimes, a question is complex or needs some follow-up. If we think your query is more complex or likely to need follow-up we’ll let you know so you can decide how you’d like to proceed. Follow-up would involve one further clarification email to answer any questions you had about our initial response. A complex query or one requiring follow-up costs £60.

What do I do if I’d like some advice?

You can get in touch by emailing admin@linkatpsychology.co.uk with you details and query.  We’d recommend putting ‘Advice Request’ in the subject header.

Research information

When we are conducting research an objective viewpoint can be invaluable in helping to identify issues we may not have considered, to provide a fresh perspective on the conception of methodological design, or to make sure we have conveyed our findings in a manner that best represents our hard work. Our research consultation services are designed to support you by providing support that is tailored to meet your needs.

What sort of support do you offer for research?

The consultation service we offer to support your research can be tailored to meet your needs. It is often useful to have initial discussion to determine the current status of your research, and where you feel you may benefit from further support.

Some examples of the types of consultation provided include:

  • Feedback on Written Work

Students engaging in undergraduate or postgraduate work are often asked to complete a dissertation or thesis as part of their course requirement. While this is done under academic supervision, the provision of supervision can vary by institution, and some students have been keen to receive more feedback on a draft of their work.

We can offer detailed feedback on your written work, which may include feedback on grammar, structure, and content. From experience, to read and provide detailed feedback, a draft of 4000-6000 words would usually require between 1-3 hours. For drafts of 6000-8000 words this would require up to 5 hours. Any written work of greater length would be quoted on an individual basis.

  • Support with Methodological
    Development

If you are looking to conduct research, knowing where to start can be daunting. Ethical and methodological considerations can seem complex, particularly if you haven’t had experience of doing this before. We can provide a 60-minute consultation in a one-off or short series format to discuss your research proposal and setting, to help you consider the benefits of different methodological approaches, and to support decision-making for procedural issues.

Where do I access your consultation services, and how much do they cost?

Often research consultation is done electronically via email exchange. However, for more extensive consultation, we can arrange to meet in person and decide on a location that is beneficial for everyone.

Given the personalised nature of this type of work, quotes may vary considerably from project to project. However, as a rough guide, our hourly rate for research consultation is £90 per hour. For work involving more extensive consultation, this may be charged at the hourly rate or with a set fee, depending on what is more appropriate given your needs.

What do I do if I would like some support with my research?

The above examples serve as a guideline for the sorts of support we can offer, but we are happy to discuss any query and deliver a tailored quote for our services.

To make an enquiry please email admin@linkatpsychology.co.uk with ‘Research Query’ stated in the subject header. Provide us with a little information about the support you require, as well as completing the relevant contact information. We will contact you via your preferred method to discuss your options and to provide you with a personalised quote.

Training information

As professionals we have an ongoing responsibility to ensure we are engaging in continuing professional development. Whether you are looking to raise awareness of mental health issues, to support and promote active listening or a psychologically-minded workforce, good training can empower staff to build on their existing skills and use their creativity to develop them further. Training doesn’t just need to be for professional development. It may be your team faces a particular challenge or difficulty, and training can help you to overcome that. Read more below for how LINKAT Psychology can help you to meet your training needs.

What sort of training do you offer?

The training service we offer to support your research can be tailored to meet your needs. It is often useful to have initial discussion to determine the subject, level, and intended audience for your training. There is further information on how to do this below, as well as some examples of training we can offer.

  • Working toward a trauma-informed workforce

NHS Education for Scotland have produced new guidance that stipulates everyone in a customer-facing role can benefit from being trauma-informed. This means that they have an awareness of the types of trauma people can face in everyday life, and how these experiences might present in everyday settings. Furthermore, such training provides guidance on how to support and signpost individuals who have experienced trauma. This training is typically delivered in a seminar-style format, with a slidekit and group tasks to consolidate learning. Training duration can vary depending on workforce needs, though would usually be a minimum of two hours.

  • Mental health first aid / Mental health awareness

As awareness of the prevalence of mental health difficulties increases, more and more workplaces are looking to train staff in the basics of recognising and understanding difficulties associated with poor mental health. Training involves raising awareness and breaking down stigma attached to such difficulties. It also supports skills development in empathic listening and supporting colleagues who are experiencing such difficulties. The format of this training can be adapted based on your needs, from hands-on group exercises to a more didactic style, though we have found a combination of these works well. Training duration can vary depending on workforce needs, though would usually be a minimum of two hours.

  • Disorder-specific training

Designed for schools, clubs, colleges, or other academic institutions, this type of training provides uniquely tailored advice to help the people and systems around an individual support them best. This might be useful if a school is enrolling a pupil with specific needs they have not encountered before. Alternatively, staff may be looking for more training in supporting pupils or students struggling with anxiety or low mood. The most flexible of our training approaches, the format and duration of training is entirely negotiable and we will work with you to determine the best approach to meet your needs.

  • Safeguarding and Child Protection

Our Safeguarding advisor, Mrs Susan Sevier provides training on topics related to safeguarding and child protection.

We currently have a pre-recorded primary level training for those that work therapeutically with adults. This is £40 and gives you access for six months.

Our intermediate level child protection training for those that work therapeutically with adults is run ‘live’, online. This only runs once or twice a year and spaces go quickly. The next training with space is Thursday 14th December 2023.

Where do I access training, and how much does it cost?

We will work with you to identify the best location to deliver training, whether that means coming to you or hiring a venue. We will travel anywhere within the UK to deliver training, however given our base is in the Tayside and Fife region of Scotland, training that is to be delivered more than 100 miles from our base will also incur costs for accommodation.

As with our other tailored services, costs may vary considerably depending on the nature of training you require. As a rough guide, our hourly rate for training is £100 per trainer per hour. However, factors such as travel, equipment required, and the level and duration of training will also be incorporated into any quote provided.

If you would like to discuss arranging a training, or getting booked on to any upcoming training, please email us on admin@linkatpsychology.co.uk.

What do I do if I would like arrange training?

The above examples serve as a guideline for the sorts of support we can offer, but we are happy to discuss any query and deliver a tailored quote for our services.

To make an enquiry please email admin@linkatpsychology.co.uk with ‘Training Query’ in the subject header.  Please provide us with a little information about the support you require, as well as providing the relevant contact information. We will contact you via your preferred method to discuss your options and to provide you with a personalised quote.
